IT’S been a difficult couple of years for the hatchback – especially the hot hatch.
Ford’s decision to axe the Fiesta in 2023 – once the UK’s favourite hatchback and still the all-time best-selling car – as well as ending production of the Focus has come to symbolise the decline of a body style that used to feel untouchable.
Yet in 2026 the hatchback is still alive and kicking despite the SUV surge – with several new models due and some noteworthy updates.
Here are seven we’re excited about.
Dacia Spring – on sale in March
The nation’s cheapest car at £12,240 – if you add in the brand’s £3,750 ‘Electric Car Grant’ – is being uprated in 2026 with a choice of 69 bhp and 99 bhp motors, as well as improved handling.
Aion UT – on sale in April
The Aion UT marks GAC’s UK debut under its Aion brand – as part of a two-car launch.
Positioned as a rival to the Mini Cooper, it delivers 134 bhp and a claimed range of 265 miles – signalling the arrival of one of China’s largest car makers in the British market with a compact EV aimed at everyday usability.
Kia EV4 GT – on sale in July
Kia’s EV4 GT gives enthusiasts a much-needed hot hatch for the EV era.
A souped-up take on the brand’s electric hatch, it aims to blend genuine performance with day-to-day practicality – while also promising a more engaging feel thanks to Kia’s novel simulated gearbox system.
Hyundai Ioniq 3 – on sale in September
Hyundai’s upcoming Ioniq 3 is expected to prioritise efficiency and everyday usability.
A mid-sized electric hatchback, it will pair a striking, sporty design with the proven EV underpinnings that have certainly served the brand well elsewhere in its line-up.
MG 4 EV – on sale in September
An updated MG 4 EV lands in September – even though China already has an all-new 4.
Nevertheless, the UK will first see a comprehensively upgraded version of today’s car, bringing plenty of improvements while MG prepares the ground for the next gen.
Cupra Raval – on sale in September
Cupra is set to expand its line-up this year with the Raval, a hot hatch with up to 223 bhp that’s pitched as an emotive driver’s car.
The brilliant Cupra Born is also getting a refresh in May with a look that will align it with the Raval’s design language.
Volkswagen ID Polo – on sale in November
VW will finally take the battle to Renault and field a £22,000 electric supermini – reviving the famous Polo badge in the process.
Set to be the brand’s entry point to the EV range, full UK specs and naming are still to be fully confirmed.
