Just days after Anthropic released its new frontier AI model, Claude Fable 5, US authorities ordered the company to restrict access to foreign nationals, citing national security concerns. Within hours, Anthropic had suspended access to the model for all its customers. While the restrictions were lifted on June 30, the exchange underscored how quickly AI has become a site of geopolitical competition.

This is a reality Silicon Valley’s most hawkish AI figures have been urging Washington to accept. In early 2025, as Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term, AI wunderkind Alexandr Wang took out a full-page advertisement in The Washington Post calling on the new administration to take drastic steps to prevail over China in technological competition.
