The British newspaper The Telegraph and others reported that Microsoft has withdrawn from an AI data center project in Essex, UK.
-
The reason is reported to be power connection issues, as the utility company UK Power Networks informed Nscale that it would not be able to supply sufficient power until the early 2030s.
-
The project was being led by the British startup Nscale, which states it will continue the project and is looking for alternative power sources.
What happened? It is reported that Microsoft has pulled out of one of the UK’s largest projects.
The British newspaper The Telegraph reported this on October 18. The report states that Microsoft has terminated its contract with the British AI startup Nscale.
The reported termination concerns a contract to lease computing power that was intended for use at a data center in Loughton, Essex.
A data center is a large facility that houses and operates many computers. AI runs on the computers located in these facilities.
The plan was to use approximately 23,000 AI-focused semiconductors (GPUs) here. The Register reported that the plan involved 23,040 Nvidia GPUs.
According to The Register, Microsoft has not responded to requests for comment. Microsoft’s own explanation has not been verified at this time.
Why is this a topic of discussion? Power connection is reported as the reason.
The reason for the withdrawal is reported to be power connection. GIGAZINE, citing British media reports, stated that the utility company UK Power Networks informed Nscale that it could not supply sufficient power until the early 2030s.
UK Power Networks stated that it does not discuss individual connections. Furthermore, as a general matter, it explained that while many data centers connect to their own distribution networks, they are often waiting for construction on the national transmission grid, which the company does not own (The Register).
The original plan was to begin operations in 2027 (GIGAZINE). On September 16, 2025, Microsoft announced it would invest $30 billion in the UK between 2025 and 2028. In that announcement, it also stated it would partner with Nscale to build the UK’s largest supercomputer using over 23,000 Nvidia GPUs.
Regarding this matter, Nscale explained that it will continue the Loughton project and its operations in the UK. It is looking for other power sources and is also searching for other locations within the UK. It also stated that its relationship with Microsoft remains strong and will continue for a long time.
The Nikkei reported that this withdrawal would be a blow to Nscale’s plans for an initial public offering (IPO, where the general public can buy shares).
I have also organized information on AI power consumption in my past articles. For those who want to know the global percentage of data center power consumption, Is AI Power Consumption Really a Problem? | Data Centers Account for About 1.5% of the World (IEA) is also a helpful reference.
How does this relate to you and the world? Behind AI, there are buildings and electricity.
If the reports are accurate, this story serves as an example that even if you have the money and the semiconductors, you cannot operate a facility if the electricity does not reach it.
The AI services we use run in distant facilities. To increase those facilities, in addition to land and machinery, construction of power transmission infrastructure is also required.
Because of this, the expansion of new AI features and services may be influenced by facility locations and power availability.
For those using AI for work, it is a good idea to review whether you are relying too heavily on a single company or location. However, it is currently unknown whether this situation will affect services for users in Japan.
Four things we still don’t know (Microsoft’s explanation, alternative locations, Nscale’s plans, and the impact on Japan)
-
Why does Microsoft explain that it withdrew from this location?
-
Where else will the approximately 23,000 GPUs be used?
-
Can Nscale find another power source or a different location? What will happen to their IPO plans?
-
Will there be any impact on AI services used by people in Japan?
