YouTube is testing a new AI tool that will allow you to ask questions about videos while watching them on your TV.
While AI tools have become an increasingly bigger part of everyday life for some part, they are still causing headaches on YouTube. A number of big content creators have spoken out about the platform allowing AI to moderate videos, and others have been frustrated with the rise of “AI slop” in videos.
YouTube has promised to make changes to clamp down on the “AI slop” videos, but the AI moderation tools are not going anywhere anytime soon.
In fact, the Google-owned platform is even leaning into a new AI tool that will allow you to ask questions to your TV about the video you’re watching.
You’ll soon be able to ask YouTube questions on your TV
The tool, which is in testing with a small number of users, was flagged by vidIQ over on X (formerly Twitter).
“While watching a video, viewers can select the “Ask” button to open the AI tool. From there they can: Choose from suggested prompts and Use the mic button to ask questions out loud,” they said.
VidIQ used an example of viewers being able to ask what ingredients are being used in a cooking video, as well as what the name of a song is, among other things. “And YouTube will give them an answer right there. On the spot,” they said.
The conversational tool has actually been around since 2024, but it’s now expanding to television screens more than two years after launching.
As per TechCrunch, testing is currently limited to “a select group of users over 18 and supports English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.”
Other platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, use similar tools already, with AI summaries and question prompts appearing on screen when you pause at certain moments.
Yet, it remains to be seen as to when YouTube will roll this TV-focused spin on the tool to a wider audience.
This isn’t the only change they’re making for TV users. Google has also revealed that adverts are about to get longer on TV, and they’ll be unskippable too, which has not gone down well.
