Motoring experts Carwow have compiled the UK’s cheapest cars to insure, with the Kia Picanto topping the list as the Iran war continues to cause cost of living fears
The UK’s most affordable car to insure has been unveiled, and it’s not a Toyota, Skoda or Ford. The ongoing conflict in Iran has Britons worried about the escalating cost of living.
A ripple effect of the war has seen prices for gas, electricity, mortgages and other household essentials either increase or forecasted to rise.
Likewise, the cost of running a petrol or diesel car is set to soar due to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz causing fuel prices to skyrocket.
With these rising costs in mind, a team of motoring experts have compiled a list of the cheapest cars in the UK to insure as money-saving guru Martin Lewis issues a warning to people about their car insurance.
The list of the most affordable cars to insure in the UK was put together by automotive specialists Carwow, who discovered that the Kia Picanto is the cheapest car to insure in the UK, and also one of the least expensive to run, reports the Express.
Belonging to insurance group one, the competitive city car was lauded for being safe, sensible and fuel-efficient. They stated: “As pretty much the only combustion-powered city car still standing, the Kia Picanto will become a de facto choice for many. Thankfully it also continues to be a very cheap one to insure.
“The Picanto offers remarkable fuel economy (you might crack 60mpg if you’re gentle on the throttle) thanks to low power and its low weight, though longer journeys aren’t the Picanto’s friend.”
Coming in a close second behind the Picanto was the Volkswagen Polo 1.0 Life. Belonging to insurance group three, the compact hatchback earned praise for being “surprisingly stylish” and “a pretty posh car”.
However, Carwow noted that whilst VW is considered a luxury brand, “you will have to go for the cheapest Polo of them all, the entry-level Life, which uses the most basic engine in the entire Volkswagen lineup”.
Taking third place behind the Polo and Picanto was the Dacia Sandero TCe 100 Expression. Also in insurance group three, it was commended for its “no-nonsense motoring” and ability to achieve fuel economy “north of 50mpg if you’re gentle with it”.
Carwow’s advice on the cheapest cars to insure in the UK comes as Martin Lewis warned that March is the “second busiest” month of the year for car insurance.
In his weekly Money Saving Expert email, Martin shared a crucial tip to ensure you’re securing the best possible deal on your car insurance.
He advised: “March is the second-busiest car insurance month, so many are renewing. But be aware average car cover costs are down 11% on last year.
“So if nowt’s changed and your renewal isn’t cheaper, don’t accept it… put yourself in the driver’s seat and use our Compare+ Car Insurance tool, which guides you through every trick in our book.”
