A top motoring expert has revealed the two reasons why Chinese-built vehicles are so popular among consumers, with demand for models at an all-time high. Charlie Harvey, motoring expert at Cazoo, stressed that China was becoming an “increasingly significant competitor against British car manufacturing” with electric and hybrid vehicles from brands such as BYD and Jaecoo becoming household names.
Charlie also explained that Chinese models were now “appearing in swathes on the used market”, which was something to watch heading into 2026.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Charlie admitted one thing stood out from the rest, with price the biggest reason so many had made the jump.
He said: “Value for money is the main reason why Chinese cars have grown in popularity over the last couple of years, undercutting the competition on price. Chinese cars allow UK buyers to access many EVs and hybrids that would have higher price tags if produced by better-known European manufacturers.
“Legislation has been putting the pressure on buyers of petrol and diesel cars, while rewarding electric-car owners with lower tax and the ability to charge at home cheaply – budget-conscious buyers are keen to find the cheapest route to low-cost motoring, and Chinese cars offer this.”
Cazoo added that many Chinese brands were offering more affordable hybrid options with lower upfront costs than Western alternatives. However, Charlie also claimed that a second reason behind Chinese car success was the wealth of innovative technology that would usually command much higher fees.
Many Chinese models include tech such as 360° cameras, panoramic sunroofs and tech-filled infotainment screens as standard, which has given it the edge.
Charlie added: “For families managing budgets, getting a well-equipped SUV for the price of a smaller European hatchback is compelling. Buying from Chinese manufacturers allows you to get a car from the class above for the price of something smaller (for example, a small SUV for the money you’d pay for a family hatchback) , allowing more room for car seats, pushchairs and other vital family paraphernalia.
“Combine this with gimmicks such as larger touchscreens and multiple charging ports to help keep the kids quiet and entertained, it’s easy to see why families are increasingly considering Chinese cars.”
