Digital nursing 3: nursing leadership in digital technology

The third article in our digital nursing series explains how nursing systems are highly complex, so digital leaders need specialist support

Abstract

Nurses are often asked to implement digital systems that do not reflect the realities of their work or meet patients’ needs. Nursing leadership can ensure systems are fit for purpose and realise the benefits of digital innovation. The great expansion of digital services during the Covid-19 pandemic created new opportunities, with more nurses appointed to clinical nurse information officer posts. To build on this progress will mean professionalising digital leadership roles. This third and final article in our series on digital healthcare explores the complexities of implementing digital systems; to succeed, digital leaders need specialist education, support and time.
