Pulse Clean Energy launches 30MW BESS in Lancashire

Pulse Clean Energy has brought its 30MW / 60MWh battery energy storage system in Charnock Richard, Chorley, into full operation, marking another milestone in the UK’s accelerating shift towards flexible, low‑carbon power.

The Town Lane site becomes the company’s eighth operational project since 2023, underlining both rapid business growth and the essential role of battery storage in strengthening Britain’s evolving energy system. The former scrapyard has been completely redeveloped into a modern storage facility designed to support grid stability as renewable generation expands across the North West.

With a two‑hour duration, the installation can supply electricity for more than 65,000 homes for an hour. It is also expected to prevent around 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually – comparable to removing 700 diesel cars from UK roads. Alongside its energy benefits, the project delivered a major environmental clean‑up, safely removing over 500 tonnes of hazardous waste and installing bat and bird boxes to encourage local biodiversity.

Town Lane is one of six sites backed by Pulse Clean Energy’s £220 million green debt facility secured from a consortium of international banks. Reflecting on the project, Vasilis Ntanovasilis, Director of Asset Delivery, said: “This project shows that investment in energy systems can revitalise neglected industrial land whilst creating the flexible capacity essential for integrating more renewables onto the grid – all while delivering lower costs and environmental benefits for local communities.”

CEO Trevor Wills added: “Town Lane represents exactly the kind of infrastructure Britain needs as we work to create a power system that delivers lower total costs while ensuring that our electricity grid is stable and secure.”

Pulse Clean Energy aims to exceed 2GWh of installed UK capacity by 2030.
