MINISTERS were urged to introduce binding regulations and restrictions on the development of superintelligent AI ahead of the first Commons debate on the issue today.
Plaid Cymru MP Ben Lake warned that regulations have failed to keep up with the pace of powerful AI systems’ development before moving the backbench business debate.
He warned “the stakes could not be higher” as powerful AI systems are “advancing at a pace that regulation has failed to match.”
“The experts are clear that now is the time to act,” he added.
“I am calling on the government to introduce binding regulations and restrict the development of superintelligent AI.
“We must make AI safe by design, as we do in other sectors such as aviation and pharmaceuticals, preventing catastrophe rather than reacting after the damage is done.”
The debate came ahead of the second reading of the Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill next month.
