Motorists have been told never to say one crucial thing when finalising a deal for a petrol, diesel or electric car, with the AA issuing a crucial warning. Turning up at a car dealer to finalise the paperwork for a dream car can be an exciting moment, and buyers could get carried away.
However, experts at AA Cars have urged road users to keep their cards close to their chests at all times. They warned buyers that being too open about how much they want the car was a bad idea, as it takes away a crucial negotiating tool.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, AA Cars explained: “Don’t show your hand too early. If you love the car, don’t be too expressive to the dealers about how much you want it. Stay neutral until the numbers are agreed.”
Dealers can use emotion against buyers and sellers who know they have a captive audience can use it to their advantage. A salesperson will know buyers are likely willing to pay more, meaning they will be less inclined to offer discounts.
Showing strong interest can put the dealer in the ascendancy from the outset, forcing buyers to keep pace with the seller. However, staying more neutral allows road users to move at their own pace, keeping sellers on their toes and going all out to still secure a sale.
The RAC has urged road users to never “rush into a purchase” even if they are attached to a particular car.
They explained: “Always be prepared to walk away and head home for more research. Although it can be challenging, don’t get too emotionally attached to a vehicle. If the seller isn’t willing to negotiate or if you feel like you’re not getting a fair deal, then look for another vehicle to purchase.”
James Hoksins, Managing Director of AA Cars, told Express.co.uk: “And remember, the strongest position you can have as a buyer is being willing to walk away. If the deal doesn’t stack up, leave your details and move on. That’s often when you get the call back.”
