A CAR dealership group has formally entered liquidation after some nine years in business.

The Essex Car Group, a used car dealer based in Dunmow, Essex, is in the process of being wound up, according to details published in The Gazette and on Companies House.

Their reports claim insolvency practitioners have been put in place to manage the firm’s remaining affairs, as well as to assess its financial position and deal with creditors who may be owed money.

The liquidation is being handled on a voluntary basis, with Gary Thompson of Basildon, Essex, named as the voluntary liquidator in documents submitted to Companies House on March 9.

His role will be to oversee the company’s closure, realise any assets that can be sold and distribute funds where possible to those owed money.

The company was incorporated in June 2017 and most recently filed accounts in June 2024.

Those accounts, which cover the year up to June 2024, suggest that although the business still had positive net assets of £269,008, its finances were relatively tight.

It held stock worth more than £1.5 million, but it also had more than £1.5 million in liabilities due within one year.

The business was also relatively small in scale, employing an average of just four staff during that period.

At this stage, it is unclear what the liquidation will mean for customers, including anyone who may currently be dealing with the company.

It is also not yet known whether any part of the business, such as its stock or operations, could be sold on.

Already, it appears the Essex Car Group’s website is offline, while the business is marked as ‘permanently closed’ on Google Maps.

The dealership specialised in selling more premium car models from brands such as Porsche, Jaguar and BMW.

Last year, over 80 dealerships were closed for varying reasons, as we looked back on the slow death of the dealer.

This included several dealer groups reducing or reorganising their dealership networks, such as Ford continuing its long-running downsizing in the UK, Evans Halshaw closing Ford sites and Group 1 withdrawing from all JLR franchises.
