Ailsa MacConnell, who grew up in New Hutton and founded residential and commercial business Studio Mac, has been listed among the winners of Homes & Gardens’ ‘Next in Design 2026’ list – which is judged by an expert panel including designer Kit Kemp MBE.

MacConnell earned her place on the list for her “distinctive approach to interiors – defined by confident use of colour, deep respect for heritage architecture, and an ability to create spaces that feel timeless and full of personality”.

Still a young business, Studio Mac completes much of its work across Scotland and has already built a diverse portfolio that ranges from Edinburgh townhouses to characterful coastal homes, alongside a growing digital presence and collaborations with independent brands.

This recognition “marks a significant milestone for the studio”, positioning MacConnell as a promising new voice in British interior design.

“I am a designer with an instinctive eye for visual storytelling and spatial flow,” says MacConnell.

“I believe each room should hold its own personality, while contributing to a cohesive narrative throughout the home.”

Looking ahead, Studio Mac plans to expand its reach across the UK, with ambitions to take on a broader mix of residential and commercial projects, including boutique hospitality spaces.

The studio is also developing a product arm, beginning with curated antiques and evolving into its own design collections.
