UK car dealership giant to close on April 24 – 500+ jobs at risk

The closure of one of the UK’s biggest second-hand car dealers has been described as a “big loss”, with staff set to lose their jobs within days. Used car dealer CarGiant confirmed that its nearly 50-acre site in West London will shut its doors for the final time on April 24.

The site was one of the largest used car dealerships in the country, formerly holding over 2,000 vehicles. CarGiant has stated that it has sold more than 1 million vehicles over more than 50 years of business.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Iain Reid, global content director at Carwow, suggested the news was a blow to the rest of the used car market.

He said: “CarGiant pioneered the used car supermarket model in the UK, so its closure is a big loss, especially for the employees affected.”

The site, sitting right next door to a HS2 interchange, is understood to be valued at close to £90million. According to AM Online, the most recent statutory accounts showed more than 500 people were employed at the company.

A CarGiant statement said: “This decision follows an extensive consultation process with our team, during which we carefully explored all potential options to secure a viable future for the business.” CarGiant said a range of factors was behind its closure, including a reduction in the supply of used vehicles and rising operating costs.

CarGiant added: “We would like to sincerely thank our colleagues for their commitment, professionalism, and the constructive way they engaged throughout that process.”

“The business will now move into a managed wind-down, with remaining retail stock being sold over the coming weeks. Our after-sales operation, including an office support team, will continue beyond the closure of retail activity to support customers and ensure that existing commitments are properly fulfilled.

“While this marks the end of an era for Cargiant, it also represents a new beginning for many of our people, whose experience, resilience, and professionalism will continue to create opportunities well into the future.”
