Athona, a healthcare recruiter based in Essex and operating nationwide, has named Hereditary Brain Aneurysm Support (HBA Support) as its charity of the year.
The 12‑month partnership will focus on raising awareness of brain aneurysms, funding vital patient support and resources, and creating opportunities for Athona staff to get involved in fundraising and advocacy.
HBA Support is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting people and families affected by brain aneurysms.
The partnership has strong personal significance within Athona, as several staff members have first‑hand experience of the impact of the condition.
One of them is Luke Shotter from Wickford, who spent last year raising funds for HBA Support after losing his father, Steve, to a brain bleed caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm in June 2024.
Luke completed a year‑long campaign called “12 challenges in 12 months”, raising more than £8,000 for the charity.
His challenges included climbing Ben Nevis, cycling 300 miles, walking Hadrian’s Wall in just over two days, completing the Cardiff Half Marathon, and tackling a Tough Mudder and a Hyrox competition in Ireland.
The final challenge saw Luke run an emotional marathon from his home in Wickford to West Ham’s London Stadium dressed as Santa, wearing the claret and blue colours of his father’s favourite team.
