Renewables-focused private equity firm invests in Anesco

Share

Nature Infrastructure Capital (NIC), a private equity firm, has announced a strategic investment in Anesco, a UK-based renewable energy company.

NIC focuses its investments on projects advancing the global energy transition and Anesco is a utility-scale solar and BESS provider.

The company works across the development pipeline for renewable energy assets and has subsequently delivered 1.3 GW of solar and BESS projects across the UK. This includes building the UK’s first subsidy-free solar farm and connecting the first utility-scale BESS system.

In total, Anesco has a portfolio of over 1.3 GW of assets on behalf of its investors.

Ara Partners, another private equity firm in the renewable and decarbonisation sectors, will be a co-investor with NIC, having already invested in Anesco.

Through the partnership, the co-investors plan to fund the development and construction of Anesco’s over 7GW solar and BESS pipeline. This will focus on both the UK and other countries where Anesco has an increasing foothold, such as Belgium and the Netherlands.

The investment will also further develop NIC’s portfolio in the European energy transition. Other recent investments include German solar and BESS developer MaxSolar, German utility-scale BESS developer ECO STOR, and renewables development platform Canopy Infrastructure.

“Anesco has built an impressive track record over more than a decade as one of the UK’s pioneers in solar and battery storage,” said Jérôme Turcotte Routhier, managing partner of the NIC Group.

“Together with Ara and the Anesco team, we look forward to deploying the capital needed to bring the company’s pipeline into construction and operation, in the UK and beyond.”

For the UK, the investment is another contribution to its expanding renewables energy market and 2030 decarbonisation goals. To reach the UK’s Clean Power 2030 targets, the nation will need 45GW of solar and 23GW of BESS capacity by 2030.

Supporting this goal, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) has issued Gate 2 connection offers for projects anticipated to connect by 2030. Several of Anesco’s UK pipeline projects have secured offers.

Hildagarde McCarville, CEO of Anesco, added: “(Nic’s) investment, alongside the continued commitment of our existing shareholder Ara, provides a powerful platform from which to accelerate the delivery of our project pipeline.”

“This partnership enables us to realise our ambitions at greater scale and pace as we continue to develop and safely deliver renewable energy projects that support the energy transition across our core markets.”
