Old UK landlines are being switched off and replaced by calls over broadband – these are the next locations on the hit list.

Like it or not, traditional copper landlines that dangle above UK streets are on their way out. The nationwide switch to so-called “Digital Voice” services has been set for January 2027, marking the end of the old copper-wire phone network.

Once the deadline comes into force, homes will move to calling via their broadband.

The transition represents one of the biggest changes to UK communications in decades, and in an effort to accelerate the move away from ageing infrastructure, BT’s Openreach network is continuing to roll out its “Stop Sell” programme.

Under these rules, providers including BT, Sky, Plusnet and TalkTalk can no longer offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas.

Stop Sell notifications have already been introduced across many parts of the UK in recent years, and Openreach has now confirmed a further expansion affecting 238 exchange locations and around 1.69 million premises.

Once these changes take effect, customers upgrading, switching or taking out new services will need to move onto full fibre broadband and digital phone services instead of the legacy copper network.

Openreach explained: “Stop Sell is triggered when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a particular exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers wanting to switch, upgrade or re-grade their broadband or phone service will then need to take a new digital service over our Full Fibre network.”

By early June, Stop Sell rules will be active across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, impacting approximately 14.2 million properties.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, said: “Our Stop Sell programme is a vital step in accelerating the UK’s transition to a modern full fibre future.

“As copper’s ability to support modern communications declines, the immediate focus is moving people onto newer, future-proof technologies.

“By phasing out legacy copper-based services in areas where fibre is widely available, we’re helping customers and providers migrate to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure. This also reduces the cost and complexity of maintaining both old and new networks ahead of the nationwide shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which is now less than eight months away.”

WHAT IS DIGITAL VOICE?

Digital Voice is BT’s next-generation home phone service. This digital calling, which connects homes via broadband technology, offers modern features not found on old landline services, such as Multi Call, three-way calling for conference calls, and call diversion to any other phone number, including mobile phones. The call quality should also be much improved with Digital Voice, though you’ll need a compatible Digital Home phone to take advantage.

For most households, upgrading to Digital Voice will have no impact on how they use their phone. The cost of the new Digital Voice and broadband service is all included in the single package price. There’s no extra charge for Digital Voice.
