Drivers who live around the coast have been told their cars are at greater risk of rust damage, warning this could cause the value of their vehicle to plummet. A mechanic said cars kept near the seaside are “more prone to rust” because of salty sea air or water.
Experts say this is reflected by resale prices, with cars damaged by corrosion being sold for considerably less. Salt accelerates corrosion, with motorists warning this can damage paint and bodywork over time. It is said that in more serious cases, this can impact key aspects of the vehicle such as brakes, suspensions, electrical connectors and even the chassis.
According to data from Scrap Car Comparison, a major UK scrappage comparison service, rust can reduce the prices of vehicles by 30%.
Tim Singer, manager at BMS Cars, one of Scrap Car Comparison’s partner garages, said: “Cars kept near the coast really are more prone to rust – it’s not a myth.
“Salt in the sea air settles on metal surfaces and accelerates corrosion, and in my experience as a mechanic, vehicles owned by people living by the seaside consistently show more corrosion damage than those based further inland.”

He said modern cars have better protective coatings to help prevent corrosion, but this doesn’t stop it being an issue.
“No vehicle is immune, especially when salt is part of the environment,” the car expert said.
Mr Singer said prevention is important and regular maintenance can make a difference. He said: “The most effective thing drivers can do is keep on top of regular washing – and that includes underneath the car.
“Removing salt build-up is crucial.”
The mechanic said it is also worth buying protective treatments like underseal coatings and wax treatments, particularly for cars often exposed to salty air.
He warned if rust is not treated, it can lead to soaring repairs bills for motorists and also potentially impact safety.
Mr Singer added: “Once rust spreads to structural or safety-critical components, costs can jump from a few hundred pounds to thousands. At that point, it can affect MOT results, safety and resale value.”
Motorists who aren’t regularly exposed to sea air or water are also encouraged to regularly wash their cars to prevent rust buildup.
