The latest broadband stats are in, and it seems millions of homes still aren’t getting the speeds they really need. In fact, some users can’t even access downloads over 10Mbps which is lower than the UK’s legal minimum broadband threshold, defined by the government. That’s according to the team at Broadband Genie, which says it ran over 144,067 consumer speed tests to see who is winning and losing.

Providers were then ranked by the percentage of tests that failed to meet that all-important 10Mbps download or 1Mbps upload threshold.

So, who is at the bottom of the list?

It seems homes that are using internet powered by a mobile signal might be more likely to have issues with Vodafone’s Mobile Broadband ranking worse for slow speeds. Broadband Genie says its test showed that 38.6 percent of Vodafone customers on its Mobile Broadband product failed to reach this low minimum threshold.

Three Mobile wasn’t far behind with 28.8 percent not getting the right speeds followed by EE’s Mobile Home Broadband,

When it comes to fixed line services, Broadband Genie says the worst-performing provider is EE.

Nearly a quarter of its customers failed to receive download speeds of 10Mbps, while 21 percent didn’t reach the 1Mbps upload threshold. EE was followed by Plusnet, TalkTalk and BT.

So what about the winners in these tests?

Coming top were all much smaller alternative networks, including Zzoomm, Hey! Broadband, Onestream, toob and Squirrel.

All of these services saw less than two percent of customers getting bad speeds.

Speaking about the results Alex Tofts, Strategist at Broadband Genie: “It’s unbelievable so many customers aren’t receiving what the government deems a ‘decent’ broadband speed. This is a low bar for providers to clear, but somehow they’re still failing customers.

“No customer should have to put up with sluggish broadband, but many factors outside your provider’s control can influence broadband speed.

“If you find your connection is consistently below what you were promised, report it to your provider. If there is an issue on the network, and your provider can’t fix it, you can leave your contract penalty-free if they’re signed up to Ofcom’s Speed Code of Practice.”
