9 best robot vacuums for 2026, tried and tested

Share

Today’s best robot vacuums are nothing like their clumsy ancestors. I’ve been testing robot vacuum cleaners since they were little more than dust-pans on wheels – since then, they’ve evolved from a techy novelty to genuinely useful cleaning tools.

The latest robot vacuums are capable of a lot, using laser-guided navigation and AI-powered cameras to identify and avoid obstacles like socks and loose cables. Many now come with optional docking stations too, which are recommended to get the most out of your robot. With a dock, the device can empty its own bin, clean itself, dry its mop and store dirt for weeks.

But finding a good robot vacuum isn’t as easy as using one. There are so many to choose from, all with different features and capacities. To help you find the perfect model for your home, I’ve been testing the top contenders to bring you my definitive guide to the robovacs that are actually worth your money. Keep reading to see my full list.

How I tested

As a technology journalist with a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve been fascinated by the rapid evolution of the robot vacuum cleaner, watching it develop from a clumsy, novelty gadget into a genuinely useful and worthwhile piece of home tech. By deploying them in a variety of real homes (including my messy two-bed flat with a long-haired chihuahua who sheds), I can see how each robot vacuum cleaner holds up when the pristine lab conditions are stripped away.

The tests I conducted to find the best robot vacuum cleaners

As well as testing their vacuuming skills, I rated each robot’s app and how easy they were to set up and maintain. I also considered the costs of any replacement parts – all robot vacuums wear out over time and require fresh filters, brushes, dust bags, and rollers.
