AI use in dismissal claims borders on contempt of court, judge warns

A judge has warned that workers’ use of artificial intelligence in dismissal claims is “perilously close” to contempt of court after one claimant’s chatbot cited large swathes of evidence that did not exist, in a case showing the technology bedevilling the workplace umpire is now hitting the courts.

In “a cautionary tale about the dangers of befriending AI-powered chatbots who masquerade as legal advisers”, the Federal Circuit Court said a delivery driver’s reliance on generative AI (GenAI) ruined his dismissal case against auto parts store Sterling Parts and put him at risk of fines and imprisonment.
