Aldi is extending a partnership with food charity The Bread and Butter Thing to all its regional distribution centres, after a trial which began last year in three.

The partnership allows Aldi suppliers to donate products that are good to eat but cannot be sold in stores for reasons such as labelling errors or damaged packaging.

The Bread and Butter Thing is the UK’s largest member-based food redistribution charity, providing groceries at a fraction of retail price through community hubs. Aldi has donated 455,000 meals in the trial and expects to give an additional 2.2 million this year in the rollout.

“Expanding this initiative across all of our RDCs marks an important step in how we reduce waste and continue to support our communities,” said Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery.

“Through our partnership with The Bread and Butter Thing, we’re ensuring even more surplus food is redirected to families who need it most, rather than going to waste.”

Bread and Butter Thing CEO Vic Harper said: “Demand for fresh, affordable food support remains high in many communities, and this partnership plays an important role in helping us meet that need.

“Surplus food that might otherwise go to waste is instead helping families stretch their budgets and access nutritious essentials. We’re pleased to be working with Aldi to grow this impact across more communities.”

Aldi also works with redistribution platform Neighbourly to enable stores to donate surplus to local charities and with surplus retailer Company Shop Group to redistribute from RDCs.
