A price change means the EV takes the crown

A Chinese small car has become the UK’s new cheapest motor.

The Leapmotor T03 has claimed the title of the UK’s most affordable car with a new starting price of £12,995. The brand – owned by automotive manufacturing giant Stellantis – has boosted its ‘Leap-Grant’ discount, offering £3,000 off the price of the T03.

The all-electric T03 boasts a range of up to 165 miles on a single charge, and comes fully loaded with an impressive array of standard features, including a 10.1-inch infotainment system, panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control. Safety is also well catered for, with lane departure warning and blind-spot detection fitted as standard across all models.

Leapmotor introduced its ‘Leap-Grant’ ahead of the government’s own Electric Car Grant scheme, and since its UK launch last year, has notched up 10,000 vehicle registrations. The T03 sits alongside models such as the C10 and B10 in the brand’s predominantly electric line-up.

Damien Dally, Leapmotor UK managing director, said: “When we launched our industry-first Leap-Grant a year ago, we offered simplicity, clarity, and financial savings for customers left confused and in limbo by the Government’s own scheme.

“To celebrate 12 months of helping buyers ‘take the leap’ to electrification, we’re delighted to be doubling the Leap-Grant on the T03, making it not just the most affordable new EV in the UK, but the most affordable new car full stop.”

The government’s Electric Car Grant provides a discount of up to £3,750 on the purchase of a new electric vehicle, although eligible models must satisfy stringent requirements relating to where the car was manufactured and how it was shipped to the UK, as well as the vehicle’s overall efficiency.
