Most fuel-efficient car in UK named – beating BMW, Suzuki and Mini

It is capable of 76.3mpg

The most fuel-efficient used car has been named – and it’s not a BMW, Audi, or MINI. The Ford Fiesta, especially the model made between 2008 and 2017, which was capable of 76.3mpg, has been crowned winner.

Speaking about the vehicle, automotive experts from Cazoo said: “One of the most-loved cars in the UK, the little Fiesta has proven the right fit for countless owners across the nation.

“There’s good reason for that, too, as it’s good to drive, pleasant to look at and practical inside. Most importantly, it’s great on fuel. There are diesel versions available that’ll get that best-possible fuel efficiency but for most people the standard petrols will be more than frugal enough and should return around 50mpg.”

Coming in second behind the Fiesta was the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer produced between 2014 and 2022. This was capable of around 74.3mpg.

Cazoo said: “It’s the diesel-powered 216d that’ll deliver the best efficiency – up to 74.3mpg, in fact – and it also qualifies for zero road tax, so it’s a win-win!”

Coming in joint third were the Suzuki Swift – the 2010 to 2017 variant – and the version of the MINI hatchback produced between 2006 and 2013. Both city cars were capable of 72mpg.

The RAC’s head of external affairs, Simon Williams, said forecourt prices were already rising owing to oil trading nearer to $70 (£52) a barrel in the last few weeks.

“Petrol rose by a penny a litre in February and is likely to go up by another penny in the next week or so to an average of 134p a litre,” said Williams.

“If oil were to climb to and stay at the $80 a barrel mark, then drivers could expect to pay an average of 136p for petrol. At $90, we’d be looking at over 140p a litre and $100 would take us nearer to 150p, but it’s all too soon to
