A UK vegetable company has fallen into liquidation after 87 years in business.

John Paine (Kent) Potatoes Ltd was voluntarily wound up, with a liquidator appointed on July 30, 2026.

The Kent based business operated in the growing of vegetables and melons, roots and tubers field.

Isobel Susan Brett was appointed the liquidator of the longstanding Ashford company.

According to Companies House the company was incorporated July 14, 1939.

Edward George Parker is listed as the director, appointed in 2007.

Recent files publicly available show the firm having amounts falling due within one year of just over £5,000. However, net assets are listed as £1,162,894.

The news comes as the UK agricultural sector is experiencing significant financial distress. It is predicted that more than a third of UK farms could go out of business in the next five years due to changes made to inheritance tax (IHT).

The conflict in the Middle East has also created uncertainty for the agricultural industry, creating further concern for farmers as energy costs may impact stock levels.

Alongside these concerns the recent spouts of hot weather have also impacted how farms are operating and could trigger food shortages across the country.
