An industrial site is set to host a new large-scale data centre under plans that would bring high-powered computing capacity to the region.

Sembcorp Energy UK has announced a joint development agreement with data centre specialist Digital Reef to deliver Phase 1 of a new data centre development at the Wilton International site on Teesside.

A planning application has been submitted for the first phase of the project, which will support up to 280MW of computing power for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Mike Patrick, CEO of Sembcorp Energy UK, said: “Wilton International offers data centre operators a unique combination of large-scale power availability, established infrastructure, and strong connectivity, enabling faster and more efficient deployment at scale.

“As one of Teesside’s leading industrial sites, it is also well-positioned to meet the UK’s digital infrastructure needs while driving investment, strengthening industry, and creating sustainable, high-value jobs in the region.”

Wilton International, one of the UK’s leading industrial sites, offers world-class infrastructure, utilities and connectivity, supporting a wide range of energy-intensive businesses.

Piers Slater, Chief executive of Digital Reef, said: “From our first engagement with Sembcorp Energy UK, we recognised strong potential within the Wilton International site.

“Its existing large grid connection, behind-the-meter power assets, utilities, infrastructure, and connectivity make it an attractive proposition and enable a fast and agile route to market.”

Subject to planning and other approvals, Sembcorp Energy UK expects that the Sembcorp Wilton International Data Centre can be ready for construction to commence by the latter part of this year.
