How Small Businesses Can Stay Relevant And Valuable In The AI Era

It’s hard to believe and understand that AI has taken a lot of jobs away from business professionals. Although the technology has many advantages that make it useful and helpful in a number of ways, there are many small businesses struggling to compete in this new landscape. Many college students are graduating with degrees in fields that soon might not even offer jobs anymore; my own company has heard from more and more college graduates looking for jobs but are having trouble finding them due to AI. Every day, people are being forced into retirement or being let go due to a low demand for particular skill sets.

Are small businesses becoming extinct? Should we just pack it in and let tech take over? We can’t simply be mad at the advances of AI, because many of us have actually been helped by it. But what do we do to keep our jobs?

I don’t believe these changes have to mean the end of our careers as small business owners. Let’s look at a few steps you can take to level up your skills and stay relevant in these AI-driven times.

1. Become an AI expert.

I’ve found that understanding AI is better than avoiding it. When you break it down, AI’s main job is to help people get more done, faster. So AI developers have made it very easy to learn and acclimate to this technology. By understanding how AI tools work and how you can apply them in various settings, you can give yourself an edge in your industry. For example, we have seen AI being used heavily in the digital marketing field. Businesses are using AI for logo design, graphic design, content writing, basic customer service and many more tasks.

So, instead of closing down your business because companies with AI are apparently doing what you do better, learn how to master AI tools yourself and apply them to your own business. Online tutorials can be great places to start. As you grow your knowledge from basic to advanced levels, you can apply AI tools within your small business to give your customers faster service and a more personalized experience.

2. Offer assistance for AI programs.

As much as AI can benefit businesses, it’s not perfect. Instead of ignoring it altogether, consider how you can offer services or add-ons to your business that will help your customers troubleshoot challenges they run into with AI programs. For example, my company is often given web design projects from AI sources that need extra work to reach their full potential. We have seen cases where AI is used for graphic design and the design is pixelated or the concept idea is too similar to other designs. AI still needs human oversight and human touch to account for errors and align with customers’ real wants and needs, so look for a way within your industry to add your expertise.

3. Reposition before you start.

If you are thinking about starting a new business, keep these technology advances in mind. Think of the field that you want to get into, and make sure it won’t be mostly taken over by AI. If it has and you aren’t yet prepared to embrace AI, you might need to pivot to a field that needs a more human touch. Starting a small business is difficult as it is; having to compete with AI can make it even more challenging. Think like a customer looking for a service you want to provide. Does that service need an actual human? Or can AI do it?

I hope these tips may have helped you. In my opinion, AI is an amazing technology once you master it. It may take time, but mastering AI and making it work for your small business is definitely possible.
