Specialist Plant Associates has invested in new tunnelling equipment to support major infrastructure projects, including a flagship carbon capture scheme, following an seven-figure funding package from HSBC UK.

The Northamptonshire-based business, part of the Joseph Gallagher Group, will use the machinery to install pipelines beneath roads, railways and waterways without surface excavation.

The technology enables closed-face tunnelling, reducing disruption, waste and emissions compared to traditional construction methods.

The equipment is set to be deployed on nationally significant projects, including the Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage scheme led by Eni.

The project will support the HyNet pipeline, designed to transport captured carbon dioxide from industrial sites across the North West and North Wales for storage beneath the seabed.

Steve Harvey said: “This funding is another step forward as we continue to develop our capability to deliver design and construction solutions for pipelines and landfalls across the utilities sector.

“HSBC UK understood our vision and has enabled us to invest in technology that will prove crucial to national infrastructure projects, like the Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage Project.”

Calum Malcolm added: “This deal underlines Joseph Gallagher’s commitment to sustainable engineering which not only advances low-carbon infrastructure but also sets a benchmark for environmental responsibility in the sector.”
