The conglomerate in a statement said investments over the past 15 years have reconfigured Stanlow into a single-train operation, expanded the range of crude grades it can process and upgraded its catalytic cracker, helping retain its role as a strategic refining asset.

Essar Group is marking 15 years of ownership of the UK’s Stanlow manufacturing complex, saying it has invested 1 billion pounds in upgrading the refinery since acquiring the site in 2011 and is now pursuing a £4.3 billion pipeline of projects aimed at transforming it into an energy transition hub.

The conglomerate in a statement said investments over the past 15 years have reconfigured Stanlow into a single-train operation, expanded the range of crude grades it can process and upgraded its catalytic cracker, helping retain its role as a strategic refining asset.

Essar Energy Transition Fuels, a wholly owned Essar Group business that owns and operates Stanlow, recently completed a £100 million ($130 million) refinery turnaround that increased throughput by about 8 per cent. The company also commissioned the UK’s first hydrogen-ready refinery furnace following a £70.9 million ($100 million) investment.

Essar cited independent analysis showing Stanlow supports around 5,000 jobs across direct, indirect and induced employment, with a UK supply chain spend of £426 million.

Looking ahead, the company said it plans to expand its retail network by targeting 800 new locations supplied directly from the refinery, advance a £4.3 billion decarbonisation investment pipeline – of which more than £1 billion is nearing a final investment decision – and explore the development of commercial data centres at the site powered by onsite hydrogen-ready generation.

“We are proud to mark 15 years since acquiring Stanlow. It remains a privilege to steward this critical asset, and we remain committed to its future. Our £4.3 billion investment pipeline represents a significant growth opportunity for the UK, supporting the country’s energy transition, generating massive long-term economic value, and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs built on the site’s proud industrial heritage,” Prashant Ruia, Chairman of Essar Energy Transition, said.
