Careers at GCHQ: How to work at the UK’s cybersecurity agency

Share

How is Artificial Intelligence (AI) impacting work at GCHQ?

The security dangers GCHQ deals with are always changing. Criminal gangs, hackers, and hostile countries are quick to use new technology. Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is changing things especially quickly. It is developing faster than ever, and one of the biggest risks is in cyber security. Modern AI can be very good at finding weaknesses in the technology we use every day, such as apps, websites, and important national systems. In the future, this could help security services to spot and fix problems before criminals can take advantage of them. But right now, it also creates new risks.

To stay ahead of such risks, GCHQ say they need “advanced technology, talented people, and strong teamwork with partners around the world and in industry.” If you want to help solve these kinds of problems in the future, they recommend subjects like Maths, Computer Science and Physics as “a great place to start”, noting that studying these “can help you build the skills needed for careers in AI, cyber security, or even working for an organisation like GCHQ one day.”
