EE’s speeds are impressive, but now there’s another way to get even quicker internet access, with London-based Community Fibre announcing its latest upgrade. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) says it has now connected a home to 8.5 Gbps access.
To put that into perspective, on a standard 80 Mbps line, it would take around 8 minutes to download a full HD movie.
With 8.5 Gbps speeds, that plummets to just 4 seconds. Gamers will see the biggest gains, with huge 80GB titles arriving on consoles in about 1 minute compared to over 2 hours on basic broadband.
“Every major advance in connectivity has changed how people live, work and interact with technology. What once felt unnecessary quickly becomes indispensable,” said Peter Rampling, Chief Commercial Officer at Community Fibre.
“Bringing 8.5 Gbps broadband into a London home is another significant step in that journey. It demonstrates what’s possible when world-class infrastructure is paired with relentless innovation and long-term investment.”
It’s clearly impressive, but so is the price: Community Fibre charges a whopping £300 per month for the privilege. That’s over £3,000 per year!
Although 8.5 Gbps sounds tempting, there’s also the question of who actually needs it. For example, a couple who simply watch a bit of Netflix at night will have no issues with a 100 Mbps connection.
Even busy families with parents working from home should find 500Mbps ample for their needs.
Community Fibre says it believes that staying ahead of demand is essential if London and the UK are to remain globally competitive.
Maybe there are some who would relish these ludicrously quick downloads, but those thinking of signing up to any new contracts should always take a minute to check exactly what they really need.
Don’t forget that the quicker the access, the more you’ll pay.
